NYC Engagement Pictures - Emily + Matt

Last week I found myself in the meatpacking district of New York City to photograph Emily and Matt; their wedding will happen next month at The Barn at Gibbet Hill and I can't wait to be their wedding photographer. Although I have a strict "no drinking for Leah at weddings" rule I'll break the rules at engagement shoots and so we started with a cocktail:

The meatpacking district was a great location for NYC engagement pictures, we had our choice of industrial areas, cherry blossoms and brownstones and even the high-line:

Emily and Matt met at a party. They talked late into the night and when it was time to leave Matt chivalrously took Emily across the city in a taxi, kissed her goodnight and took another taxi all the way home. Emily was most impressed.

That chance meeting at the party led to a first date and a very happy relationship.

Emily and Matt both have incredibly busy schedules and Emily was pleasantly surprised when Matt reserved a day in her calendar for a "day of fun and love". The day started out perfectly with relaxing massages and then a cooking class. Emily was surprised when Matt suggested they go for a drive.

One of the advantages of doing an engagement shoot is that your photographer might suggest pictures in a place that doesn't seem to make sense but when you see them they do! There was a massive construction project in the background here but I knew the illuminated scaffolding would make for an interesting backdrop!

Emily didn't know where they were driving to but finally they arrived at Blue Hill at Stone Barns where they settled in for a memorable multi-course dinner. Course after delicious course arrived at their table and Emily was surprised when mid-dinner they were offered a private tour. After the tour, Emily & Matt were then re-seated in a private room. Little did Emily know that Matt had pre-arranged for a small video camera to be set up, the video recorded a silver domed platter being brought out and Emily's reaction to the engagement ring that it was hiding!

Emily & Matt - thank you for being so fun to photograph and for showing me a little glimpse of your hometown. I'll see you next month!!!

Wedding Photographer :: The Barn at Gibbet Hill Wedding Pictures :: Janine + Nancy

Happy Thursday! Did you know that Thursday is the new Friday? And Friday is the new Saturday? I have some favorites from a great wedding to share with you today - Janine and Nancy chose to have a wonderfully intimate Thursday wedding at the Barn at Gibbet Hill in Groton, MA

As I arrived Nancy was just heading over to the Barn to get ready and drop off some additional fall decor including hand carved pumpkins:

You might notice a lot of blue color featured in this post. Janine and Nancy asked their guests to wear "something blue" along with sapphire blue jewelry and blue invitations and programs:

Nancy & Janine's fur babies were also included in the wedding, here's Bruin waiting to head over to the barn.

But first, Nancy had some thoughtful gifts to give out:

The always fabulous Joanne of Joya Beauty was making everyone look and feel beautiful:

Janine's father sees her for the first time:

Nancy got dressed and had more gifts, this one for her Mom:

If you haven't been to The Barn at Gibbet Hill then you're missing out! It's a beautifully restored 100-year old barn overlooking rolling green grassy hill with gamboling cows. You don't even have to be invited to a wedding to visit as The Gibbet Hill Grill is a pretty fabulous restaurant:

Janine and Nancy really wanted to enjoy as much time as possible with their friends and family at cocktail hour so they decided to do a first look and take all of the formal pictures before the ceremony. They were both SO happy to see each other:

How excited do you think Nancy and Janine were to get married? :) They make such a sweet couple:

The rolling green hills of Gibbet Hill make the perfect setting to take a little walk:

We took some relaxed family pictures:

Janine and Nancy had an amazingly fun bunch of bridesmaids and best people:

The almost-newlyweds heading back to the barn to hide out from arriving guests:

Janine wisely wore flip flops so she didn't sink into the grass for the pictures but it was now time to slip on her fabulous Betsey Johnson shoes:

Ceremony programs and personalized bags of rice to throw for guests:

Bruin wore a blue bow tie as ringdog and Jersey had her blue tutu on as flowerdog :)

Nancy couldn't stop smiling as Janine walked toward her:

I love the cows just hanging out in the background:

The wedding ceremony was super thoughtful and personal. Janine's brother acted as the officiant, Janine and Nancy wrote their own vows and they incorporated knot-tying to signify the strength of their relationship:

A surprise for Janine! Nancy plays hockey and her fellow hockey players brought their hockey sticks to form a little recessions arch:

Cocktail hour was out on the deck and guests enjoyed all sorts of yummy food along with a signature cocktail - the Janini Bellini!

Home crafted boxes containing custom m&ms acted as escort cards and favors:

Inside the barn everything looked beautiful including the cupcake tower with mini Bruin & Jersey models:

Janine and Nancy made their way into the barn and danced their first dance together:

Happy toasts! Now would be a good time to mention that I was working alongside some of the Long Haul Films crew - in this case it was actually Chris & Lucy (along with Megan) who are heading up Long Haul Films UK now!

I loved the plans for dinner. Janine and Nancy worked with (the always amazing) Gibbet Hill team to come up with all sorts of amazing small plates and food stations - Guinness braised short rib and mashed potato, seared scallops and lemon remoulade, jalapeƱo mac n' cheese and more! SO good!

Parent dances:

Guests enjoyed cupcakes AND hot apple cider donuts:

The dance floor was opened and Dave of Good Times Unlimited kept the music playing!

And then they lived happily every after!

Janine & Nancy - thank you so much for choosing me as your photographer. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you both (not to mention Bruin & Jersey!) - wishing you a lifetime of love, laughter, health, happiness and long walks on the beach in Ogunquit!
