Chocolate Truffles

January 29th was my first wedding of 2011. As I downloaded and backed up all of the image files yesterday I saw a picture that made me smile (well, I was actually smiling at lots of images coming up later this week...)

Saturday was such a great day; having a great photographer friend shoot with me, a wonderfully well-planned timeline, the bride getting ready with her best friend, sisters and Mom, a first-look with tears, a perfect wedding ceremony (more tears!), two welcoming families, an intimate wedding reception in the private room at Mistral and of course Becky & Duke themselves who have been just amazing to work with.

As the wedding reception wound down on Saturday night, and guests relaxed with desert and fine wine we packed up our equipment and said our goodbyes.

After Becky's Mom, Kathy had confirmed that we'd eaten (yay to the phenomenal team at Mistral who are currently #1 for taking the best care of us. I think it was the first time I've ever heard "What can we get you to eat and when would you like to eat it?") she tried to get us to take home slices of wedding cake. When we insisted we were so full from dinner she wouldn't take no for an answer and insisted we wait there.

We watched as Kathy located a clean napkin and filled it with teeny tiny handmade chocolate truffles from her own table before pressing the truffle-filled napkin parcel on us before we were allowed to leave :)

In the taxi back to my car, Kate and I ate the most delicious truffles ever and through a mouth full of chocolate I asked "How good is this?" And I wasn't talking about the truffles.

I am so incredibly lucky to get to work with my couples, they trust me to act as their eyes to document their wedding days, they open their hearts and their families welcome me in (and send me home with truffles!). I still can't believe I get to call this a job and I'm beyond excited for what 2011 is going to bring.

It wouldn't be a blog post without a picture so here are the truffles:

And the blog schedule for this week? In between client meetings for the last few dates of 2011 and the first ones of 2012 and finalising the last wedding albums of 2010 we'll have:
Getting ready pictures tonight or tomorrow
Wedding ceremony at the Seaport Winter Garden Atrium on Wednesday
Wedding reception at Mistral Private Dining Room on Friday.
You don't want to miss it!

Engagement Pictures in the Snow :: Newburyport, MA :: Stephanie + Mike

Last Saturday I had another winter engagement session in the snow - busy, busy, busy!

I met up with Stephanie & Mike at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, MA to get them a quick "ten pictures in ten minutes" for their wedding website and save the date. Incidentally, Maudslay was crazy busy with cross-country skiers and snow-shoeing people, I think I might pick up a pair of snow shoes for me and Mr H...

I actually met Stephanie and Mike to talk about photographing their wedding at their home and their dog Louie was going CRAZY when I arrived. I'm cool with dogs; owning two of the most manic lunatic dogs in the world. So Louie was allowed out to say hello. And wouldn't you know it, he settled down quietly at my feet to carefully view the wedding pictures and albums.

Louie came with us on the shoot and I told him if he looked carefully he might see a cat in the lens...

It was freeeeeeeeezing but Mike had some moves to keep Stephanie warm...we're planning a full Spring shoot in Ogunquit the place of the proposal and when I post those pictures in a few months you'll get the full story of how Mike saw Stephanie in a martini bar in Faneuil Hall in Boston and made his moves...

Speaking of proposals, you usually need a ring. And what a ring this is:

Time to take a walk with Louie:

The late morning winter light was rather lovely:

So I just made Mike and Stephanie hang out there on the side of the road for a bit longer:

Oh just one more:

Much laughing, most of it at Louie ;)

This image reminds me of a trip that Paul and I made to Banff years ago, we walked out to some kind of glacier and I nearly died. Minimal risk of that in Newburyport though...

OK Louie, time for your close up. Work it Louie, give me fierce...

Stephanie & Mike - hope you enjoyed your preview pictures. Please pass along my regards to Louie and tell him that he's most welcome at the Ogunquit shoot in the Spring! Your full gallery will follow in just a few days!

Boston Winter Engagement Pictures in the snow :: Caitlin + Peter

Meet Caitlin. Caitlin had a good friend called Dan - this is not Dan in the picture ;)

Meet Peter. Peter had a good friend called Dan. Dan is also not in this picture:

Dan introduced Caitlin to Peter. Caitlin had a boyfriend so Peter refrained from making any moves. So Caitlin kissed Peter (after the boyfriend was out of the picture of course!). Fast forward through the first date watching You, Me and Dupree, discussions about the merits of Oprah, and other such fun. Peter asked Caitlin to marry him. And Dan will be in the wedding party. The End. Don't you love a story with a happy ending?

However, there is a serious issue with Caitlin & Peter's relationship...

I checked that Caitlin & Peter were comfortable about me blogging this and they thought it might help other couples in a similar situation...

And here it is....

Caitlin is a Jets fan and Peter loves the Patriots.

But they're working on it ;)

After the first six months of dating, Caitlin remembers telling a friend "it's just different!" Caitlin is a smart girl :) Peter is a lucky guy:

There was much laughing at our winter engagement picture session. We started out in the Back Bay, stopped by the Boston Public Gardens and ended up on Commonwealth Ave which seems to be the hot spot for engagement pictures at the moment.

Liking this one:

I asked Caitlin & Peter about what they like to do together and they told me about how they're happiest hanging out at home with each other and their crazy cats. Caitlin shared that they liked cooking together. Peter looked at Caitlin and they both started to laugh and then told me about a disasterous incident involving the magic bullet (you know from the infomercial?) and a fettuccine alfredo recipe of oil and cheese.

I can totally relate to this as Mr H. is frequently wowed by the informercials resulting in deliveries of large brown boxes containing such delights as topsy-turvy tomato planters, microwaveable pasta boats or my personal favorite, the slap chop.

The fettuccine alfredo was a disaster and they threw away the recipe book, but kept the page to remember.

Sometimes people get really upset if you stand outside their doorway. What's with that?

Caitlin and Peter waited patiently for the night to go dark so we could see the Christmas lights on Comm Ave:

All good things come to those who wait:

Caitlin and Peter will get married in July at The Henderson House in Weston, MA and I can't wait to be their wedding photographer:

Winter Engagement Pictures in the Snow :: NH Photographer :: Meg + Dave

In December we had a couple of big snow storms, not as crazy as the one that's happening outside right now but I love me a little winter engagement session in the snow.

Many couples want to wait until the spring or summer for engagement pictures but then what to do for the save the date or the wedding website? Hmmmm....

And so it's one of my complimentary "ten pictures in ten minutes" sessions to the rescue. Email me at leah@leahhaydock.com if you'd like to find out more...

Ten pictures in ten minutes was exactly what I did on a snowy December day for Meg and Dave who are getting married at the Rose Garden at Lynch Park in June (which is such a beautiful wedding venue, all greenery and hidden garden feeling and it's right on the ocean, check out Kristin & Zach's wedding there last year **here**)

Just before we were scheduled to start, I got a phone call from Meg & Dave to say that they'd made a stop at Starbucks and wanted to know if they could bring me something? Seriously how brilliant are my couples?

Starbucks is not only the home of lovely hot beverages (mine's a grande, extra-hot, no-fat, no whip, white hot chocolate, just two pumps and don't accidentally make it a mocha - maybe this will help you understand why I said I was "all-set, thanks!" to Meg rather than explain!) but it also has a special meaning as it was actually the scene of Meg & Dave's first meeting:

Meg explained that she's ALWAYS on time but for the date she was running a little late. Dave described how she came flying in through the door looking just a tiny bit flustered and how incredibly happy he was to see her. I'm not sure if there was hugging on the first date but I imagine it might have been a little bit like this:

Our session was carefully timed so we could get late afternoon sun, dusk and then some twinkly light action. If you're a regular blog reader (and new or old, please feel free to say hello in the comments) then you'll know I'm a twinkly light fiend, I also enjoy a silhouette sometimes:

Ahhh, twinkly light heaven. And of course Meg and Dave are looking rather cute:

Did you know it's considered rude to take winter engagement pictures in the snow and not throw at least one snowball:

Bling Bling! Dave proposed to Meg in the Boston Public Gardens and we'll head there in the Spring for a full engagement pictures session:

One last picture:

Meg and Dave - much fun! Thank you for being so incredibly easy to photograph, we're going to have so much fun in Boston and I can't wait to meet Ada. I hope you like your preview pictures!

Wayside Inn Wedding Photography :: Sudbury, MA :: Jennifer + Wiktor (Part II)

After the super unique wedding at the Mary Martha Chapel involving a Polish bread and wine ceremony (click **here** if you missed it) it was time for the wedding reception at the charming and rustic Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA

I love me a first dance, it's all "Yay! We did it" and "Wow, we're actually married!" kind of moments:

See?

The toasts were fantastic, first Jennifer's Godmother, Carolyn spoke from the heart about her wishes for the newlyweds:

And then Anna made the whole room laugh with her tales of Wiktor's special talents:

Parent dances:

The wedding party was mostly made up of nieces and nephews and they were pretty happy with the goodie bags they got to keep them busy:

And then the party really got started with dancing and laughing and even some Euro-electro-pop especially for Wiktor:

I'll leave you with this image of Jen & Wiktor late into the evening:

This was my last wedding of 2010 and it was just so great. As I walked back to my car (which I'd left at the chapel) I felt slightly euphoric about how incredible it is to be going into my fourth year of wedding photography and to still love everything about weddings. I feel a review of 2010 coming on...

I thought I'd take one last shot so balanced my Nikon D3s on a wall and used the self-timer (to avoid shake) for this picture in the pitch-black night at ISO 12,800:

Happy Tuesday! Winter engagement shoots coming up this week....and then my first wedding of 2011 is in less than 3 weeks...

Longfellow's Wayside Inn Wedding in Sudbury, MA :: Jennifer + Wiktor (Part I)

The weekend before Thanksgiving I had my final wedding of 2010. It was a great finish to a fantastic year (I'll be doing some kind of review in the next few weeks - who says you have to do reviews on New Years Day?!?)

Jennifer and Wiktor got married in a beautiful ceremony in the Mary Martha Chapel and then celebrated with family and friends at their wedding reception in the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA.

When you're planning a wedding in the winter months of November through March, it can be completely dark by 4:30pm; if you'd like family pictures and couples portraits outside then you might want to consider doing a first look/pictures before the ceremony or having an earlier ceremony time of 2 or 3pm. Although of course, if you choose not to see one another before your evening ceremony - as Jen & Wiktor did - then I'm more than comfortable with the lighting required for indoor pictures.

I went early to the Wayside Inn to set up my lighting equipment in the various rooms for the ceremony, cocktail hour and the reception and as I left to drive to Jen's Mom's house, the Mary Martha chapel was beautifully illuminated by the late afternoon sun:

As I knocked on the door, I noticed this sign which seemed very apropos:

Jen wore these beautiful pearls:

And of course there were wedding rings:

Wiktor waited patiently at the altar for Jennifer. You'll notice more people than perhaps you would expect standing up and that's because this was truly one of the most unique and personal wedding ceremonies I have ever seen with such a focus on family. The wedding was actually officiated by Jen's Stepfather Vic:

Jen walked toward Wiktor simply beaming:

And by the power vested in me by the state of.....hold on! we haven't had the ceremony yet...I guess Wiktor was just so happy to see Jen that he decided a pre-wedding kiss was in order:

The wedding ceremony incorporated all sorts of family traditions and acknowledged Jen and Wiktor's heritages. Wiktor is Polish and Polish wedding tradition has the bride and groom greeted by their parents with bread, salt and a glass of wine. Wiktor's mother had baked the bread herself and she explained that the bread is to convey the parents wish that the couple never go hungry. The salt represents the wish for the couple to work through the hard times. The wine is to offer refreshment after their long day. And in a nod to Jen's family, the wine was replaced by a family-brewed "moonshine":

The newlyweds as they leave the chapel:

And then we actually came straight back into the chapel to take the family pictures.

When it comes to family pictures I usually suggest thinking carefully about the groups of people you would like and need to be photographed. You can torture yourself (have you ever tried smiling for an hour?) and your guests by coming up with every random permutation and grouping (expect each group picture to take 3-5 minutes to gather everyone together, arrange and take multiple shots to avoid blinking!) OR you can make a short but thoughtful list of the groups that you'd like to see in your album and those that will be framed for the mantel.

It also makes the most sense to give a copy of the short family shot list to someone who actually knows the people involved. This can be an organized and reliable family member or one of your wedding party. You usually make a considerable investment for your wedding photography so it's better to have your photographer actually taking pictures vs. hunting people they don't actually know :)

At Jen & Wiktor's wedding I totally lucked out. Not only was a copy of the short list given to Jen's cousin Beth, but Beth is also an events manager. Beth was an absolute joy to work with on the wedding day and was invaluable in calling the groups.

I usually just show one or two family pictures on the blog but with this wedding being virtually 100% about family, I'll share a few extra.

There's no rule that says a family picture has to be stiff and posed. Here's Jen and Wiktor laughing with her father Ron, and stepmother, Laura:

I loved how all the children; nieces and nephews were involved as flower girls, ushers, ring bearers:

With Andre and Barbara, Wiktor's parents:

Jennifer's extended family:

And of course with Jen's amazing mom Nina and her stepfather (and wedding officiant), Vic:

Just 20 minutes later we had finished the family pictures and so I stole Jen and Wiktor for a little time for couples portraits, here they are outside the Wayside Inn (more thanks to Beth, this time for holding my light!):

I love the excitement and joy that I see immediately after a couple get married:

In a little world of their own:

Ooops - that's already twenty preview pictures. I will sign off for now and you can check back in tomorrow for part II of the wedding reception including the most fabulous toasts from Jen's Godmother Carolyn and Wiktor's Sister Anna...
