Flowers! Wedding Flowers! Bouquets! Boutonnieres ! Centerpieces! How to choose a wedding florist? How much should wedding flowers cost? How do I know what flowers I need?

As I started to write this post I wondered where the tradition of having flowers at the wedding came from...and thanks to the power of the interweb I found out that it was traditional to have flowers and herbs at a wedding even in Ancient Greek times. Mostly as an offering to nature, a thank you to guests and to perfume the air (obviously they didn't have antiperspirant deodorant back them!). Who knew?

I'd like to introduce you to Kerianne Steele who is the Director or Weddings & Events at Les Fleurs in Andover, MA. After reading this post you should know EVERYTHING there is to know about flowers at your wedding :) Here is the wonderful Kerianne:

I first saw flowers by Les Fleurs at Alison & Matt's wedding at The Colonnade and I loved the elegant design.

And then just a few months later Les Fleurs was the florist for Hillary & Paul's wedding at Tupper Manor, I adored the lemon centerpieces and I got to see Kerianne and her colleagues hard at work with the beautiful displays. Hillary's bouquet was so classic with the trailing ivy:

Kerianne filled the huge urns with greenery:

Lemons were incorporated into the escort card display and the centerpieces:

A couple of weeks ago I stopped by the store in Andover, MA (totally worth a visit! It's like entering a lush English garden) and met with Kerianne to get the scoop on all things to consider when choosing a wedding florist.

Leah: Kerianne! It's SO nice to see you for more than 2 minutes as we pass each other at weddings and say a brief hello!
Kerianne: I know! It's always so much fun to see your pictures of our flowers on your facebook page and blog!
Leah: So tell me all about Les Fleurs?
Kerianne: Well, we actually moved to this just location 2 years ago but Les Fleurs was started by Sandra Shaheen about 20 years ago on N.Main St in Andover. Sandra's Mom was a florist and Sandra lived in Paris for a while where she really appreciated the organic feel of flowers and how seasonally specific flowers were used. In Paris it was also common to go beyond basic flowers and incorporate herbs, berries, even artichokes! At Les Fleurs we keep that kind of European style. We do mainly weddings and events, we're also a full retail florist and we even do event design and day of coordination.

Leah: And how did you find yourself here?
Kerianne: It's actually kind of a funny story. I needed a part time job in college and I got a job as a flower deliverer but I was absolutely terrible as a map reader! Luckily they took pity on me as I've been here for 6 years this month!

Leah: What to you enjoy most about your job?
Kerianne: [laughs] Oh this is so silly but I'll tell you anyway. I really like that I can throw things on the floor! So I can work on an arrangement or a bouquet and I make the BIGGEST mess and it's really fun to me everyday! Being serious though, I just love the different textures and colors of all of the flowers. I love the excitement you bring to the couple on this momentous day and seeing how happy they are when their vision is realized. I love working with couples on event design, helping them with their theme, the lighting, the linens. I love the change in seasons and how it changes what we have to work with through the year, I could go on and on...

Leah: If a couple is recently engaged, they have a venue and they're starting to think about flowers, where do they even start?
Kerianne: Thinking about your venue is a good place, sometimes there's a intrinsic theme or feeling and you don't want to fight it. At Tupper Manor for example, there's a sort of beautiful English feel to the venue, it makes me think of dahlias and peonies in cut crystal. There's also the beach on the property so it lends itself well to a coastal theme. So the venue is a good starting point, you wouldn't want super stark modern flowers in a historic building! I find that couples are usually flower-specific or color-specific if they have something in mind. Sometimes I'll get brides who are open to anything, they might say "well, the bridesmaids will be in a watermelon color, what would you suggest?"

Leah: So should a couple have an idea of what they want before they meet with you?
Kerianne: Not at all! Somtimes they do have some ideas/wishlists and other times they're completely open to suggestion. We're here to help as much or as little as they like! It's very important to work in season. We help them pick a color family, as not all flowers come in all colors! Sometimes it's helpful if we meet with couples even before they've made a firm decision on their color for stationery or dresses which are available all year round. We can advise them of colors that are available during the season they'll be getting married in and they can go from there. If they don't have an event coordinator or a wedding planner we also love recommending linens and tablescape designs.

Leah: What kind of process it is? How many times do you meet with the couple?
Kerianne: We have a couple of appointments to make sure that we cover everything. At the initial consult we'll talk about flower availability, price point, texture and colors. We'll help them on style and heights and how it affects their budget. For example at Atkinson Country Club you have very high ceilings so tall centerpieces look awesome. If they were all low they would be lost in the room! However to save money, they might want to consider doing half high and half low.

We meet again 3-4 weeks before the wedding to go over the final plans. It has to be within this timeframe to make sure the flowers we've agreed on are in season. It's so important that you trust your florist, you don't want to be worried on the day! At the sample appointment we have a full mock up. Couples come through the door and they're blown away. We can get their linens and candles and try to really create what they'll see on the day of their wedding. It's awesome for them to see it all come together.

Actually, speaking of seeing your flowers before the wedding, we have a lot of clients who'll book us with more than 12 months to go and in this case we invite them to stop by the store on a Thursday or Friday in the month of their wedding (so if you book an October 2013 wedding you can go see what kind of flowers are available in October 2012). We sometimes have multiple weddings in a weekend so they have an opportunity to really see what's available in the season.

Leah: You mentioned the height of the centerpieces...
Kerianne: I know exactly what you're thinking! We ALWAYS recommend low for the table that the couple will be sitting at. Your photographer should have a clear view during toasts. I'm very realistic, the proportion is important but we know that flowers are a one day use, you have your pictures for life so spend wisely [Leah: It's at this point I was to lean across the table and kiss Kerianne! You have no idea what a nightmare it can be to try to capture a loving glance between a couple at dinner when there's a 5 foot high arrangement between them!]

Leah: I love that you recommend a low centerpiece on their tables! What other advice do you give?
Kerianne: I ask them a lot about their style. If you generally like modern and compact, you'll struggle with a rustic and organic concept.

When it comes to bouquets, proportion and weight should always be considered - how tall the bride is, size of her waist, will she be wearing heels? An experienced florist will always be looking/thinking about this. You want your guests to see you, THEN your gown, THEN your flowers! Not the other way around. If I have a very petite bride with a tiny waist I'm not going to give her a huge trailing bouquet. If I have a taller bride with a full dress, a little posy will be lost. Fun fact - the size of your head is usually in proportion with your waist! When I say this, if the groom is there he'll look over and nod!

Leah: I imagine you do a lot of weddings each year, I know from a photography point of view I am constantly striving to do something better and to keep it fresh, how does that work with flowers?
Kerianne: We want to make every client's wedding feel completely personal to them. Some florists have catalogs you pick from and we would never do that at Les Fleurs. We try to never do exact duplicates of bouquets or centerpieces. Let's say I have 15 weddings coming up with a green and white color palette the seasons would allow me to do completely different things for each one! I could do lilac, tulip and sweet pea for one. The next wedding might have calla lilies, orchids and dahlias [Leah: Kerianne gave me all sorts of examples here but I can't write that quickly and some of the flower names were really complicated ;)]
We personalize everything, from the way we wrap the bouquet to the little finishing details. We're an independent local florist so we have complete freedom in our design.

Leah: Slightly off topic but let's talk about tents. I feel like a lot of weddings are held in tents, they're not always beautiful Sperry tents or with stunning uplighting. I do my best to make them look a million dollars in pictures but sometimes a white plastic tent is just a white plastic tent!
Kerianne: There are lots of ways to dress up a tent. Strangely when couples tell me they're getting married in a tent they are often fixated on trying to disguise the poles with flowers.
Leah: How strange! Guests expect to see poles holding the tent up! Plus I can shoot around a pole!
Kerianne: Exactly. Uplighting is amazing and can turn a cold plastic white sheet wall into a warm orange or purple glowing wall. Draping with fabric can be amazing but can also be costly. However you can also choose to just accent key areas. So you can drape the area behind where the couple are sitting (as that's where everyone will be looking and the direction for the photographs) and then maybe swag the entrance with material so that the draped area doesn't look out of place.
Leah: This is an awesome idea! Obviously I have some mad photography skills ;) but if a couple are sitting with their backs to a white wall there's not much I can do with it!
Kerianne: Absolutely, we've built little mini forests with tiny trees behind the couple with twinkly lights. We've also added small trees with uplighting from the bottom so it feels like a European Courtyards. Chandeliers and paper lanterns can also bring ambience to the tent.

Leah: So tell me about some of the trends in the wedding world:
Kerianne: I feel like we had a bit of a Lily Pulitzer theme going on for the last few seasons! I've never done so many pink and green weddings. This wedding season I'm seeing a lot of apricot and gray, yellow and gray, and bright orange continues to be a hot color no matter what time of year. Eggplant purple has been popular and continues to be. I'm seeing more variations on a color palette. We just did a beautiful wedding where each of the bridesmaids wore a different dress in the blue/slate family and they each carried a white bouquet but everyone had a different type of white flower. [Leah: I am almost drooling, this sounds so awesome, all of the different textures]. We've done a lot of small bud vases on tables with different stems in each. Speaking of Trends, Pinterest has been huge! It can really help you imagine the overall look and feel. I always encourage bringing a printout of your Pinterest board! Martha Stewart, The Knot and Style Me Pretty are also great sources for inspiration. I feel like Grace Ormonde and InStyle are a little more aspirational. It's hard to explain to a couple that each individual centerpiece may be $500 when they have a budget of $2000 for a lot of tables!

Leah: Speaking of budget, I remember planning my own wedding and not having a CLUE about how much I should budget for flowers. And I'm a little embarassed to admit this to you but we definitely cut our flower budget so we could get an ice martini bar!
Kerianne: Not at all! I completely understand. Some of the biggest things to consider when planning your budget are:
1. Importance - how important are the flowers to you? Is your focus on the bouquet, boutonnieres and corsages or the centerpieces.
2. The size of your wedding party. If you have a limited budget for flowers and a huge wedding party the majority of your budget will go on flowers for the wedding party. Conversely with a smaller wedding party you'll have a lot more money available for flowers in the venue.
3. If you have a venue that needs height in your centerpieces we can do half high and half low to make it more affordable.
4. If you have 10 guests per table vs. 8 guests per table you'll have less tables and therefore will need less centerpieces (and less linens!)
At Les Fleurs we have no minimum [Leah - this is HUGE!!! There are some florists that won't even talk to you unless you plan on spending a certain amount], we won't compromise our style to do cheap flowers but we'll absolutely work with our clients to give them the best they can get. It's really important to think about what your focus is. I know I personally chose our wedding date so the flowers I wanted were in season!

We've done flowers for a very intimate event at the Lanam Club for less than $1000 and then we've done huge spectacular weddings where the flowers have been very important to the clients for over $35,000. If I had to give an average I'd say most wedding fall in the $5000 range for flowers, linens and rentals can be another $2000. The fact that we have no minimum means that we can work will all sorts of options to get a good fit.

We can rework quotes to make it fit for their budget - we might change 20 tall centerpieces to 13 tall and 7 low. The overall effect will still be there but the cost will be lower. We know a lot of venues very well so we can make suggestions. For example at Tupper Manor you don't really see the side tables in the photographs or when you enter so you can do smaller centerpieces. If you're at the Barn at Gibbett Hill you can save money by not doing tall centepieces upstairs.

Leah: Kerianne, it's been such a pleasure talking to you! You literally live and breathe flowers! I've leant so much, I know this will be incredibly helpful for many of my clients! Now tell me a little bit about what you get up to when you're not around flowers?
Kerianne: Ha! I'm always reupholstering! I'm recently married, I think I already mentioned that we chose our wedding date around the seasonality of the flowers I wanted! We live in Chelmsford with our 5 year old mini dachshund named Luka.
Leah: What??!?!? We have two mini-dachshunds!!! [just for you lovely blog readers I will now cut out the 15 minute ooohing and ahhhing over cell phone pictures of our mini dachshunds, suffice to say that mini-d's rule the dog world].
Kerianne: We're big family people. My husband and I loke to ice skate, ski and snowboard. Actually my husband is a saint because he comes antique shopping with me so I can find new upholstery projects.

Leah: Tell me about the flowers at your own wedding...

Kerianne: Well, we got married about 2 years ago and had a very English garden theme. Low cast iron urns, buttery french yellow, ivory and green colors. And roses! Roses everywhere. I actually did my own flowers out of Les Fleurs. We made the cocktail arrangements in the store on Wednesday as I was so excited! I designed everything and Yvette made the centerpieces. My hands made my own bouquet - because I wanted to! It was just perfect and so romantic!

And with that ladies and gentleman Kerianne had to get back to work:

Kerianne is incredibly knowledgeable about everything flower/design/wedding related! You should TOTALLY make an appointment to meet her if you think the European, organic, rustic style of flowers might just be what you're looking for. She's super friendly and warm AND she has a mini-dachshund!!! It doesn't get any better....

Vendor Spotlight :: Best Boston Wedding Venue :: The Colonnade Hotel

I'm back with another vendor spotlight interview where we find out more about wedding industry professionals I have had the pleasure of working with...

Today we're at The Colonnade Hotel in Boston, MA. I photographed Alison & Matt's wedding here and was absolutely blown away by the look and feel of the hotel, the crazy-helpful hotel team, the most beautifully presented and delicious food I've ever seen at a wedding (and I've seen a lot...) and so I thought you might like to know more...

Although many of my couples already have their wedding venue booked when they contact me, I'd say maybe 10% get in touch with me first to check my availability (especially if they've been in a previous wedding I've photographed). If you're still on the hunt for Boston wedding venue in a luxury boutique hotel right in the Back Bay, you should make an appointment quick!

I had the pleasure of interviewing both Gabi Urso, the Social Catering Manager and Chef Nicholas Calias and we'll start with Gabi:

Leah: So Gabi! I can't tell you how happy I am to be back at the Colonnade, it's so welcoming, full of amazing photographic opportunities and the team are just fabulous! I'd love to know a little more about you:
Gabi: We're so happy to have you here! Well, I'm originally from Conneticut and I went to school in Newport, RI where I got my Masters in Business Hospitality. I've always had a love for the hospitality industry, anything food and wine related and I personally love cooking and baking. The only other thing I could imagine doing would be singing on Broadway!

Leah: Tell me more about your role at The Colonnade.
Gabi: I've been at the hotel for 3 years now and in my current position as Social Catering Manager for almost a year. The majority of my work is wedding related but I also take care of Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, birthday and anniversary parties. I show the different facilities from our ballrooms to smaller salons and of course Boston's only rooftop pool to couples thinking of having an event here.

Leah: So if a couple is interested in the Colonnade for their wedding what should they do?
Gabi: Make an appointment and come on in! I personally meet with all couples, we tour guest rooms and suites so they can see where they would be getting ready. They can look at our ceremony space if they plan on having the whole event here. I'm very detail oriented and I help them to see how everything would look on the day. How their guests would see it. We'll then chat and I'll answer all of their questions. I schedule lots of time for each meeting so no-one feels rushed.

Leah: Once a couple have made their (wise) decision to have their wedding at The Colonnade, what kind of role do you play?
Gabi: As it's usually the first time they've ever done this, it really varies by couple. For some, I act as their personal wedding coordinator and hold their hands through the process. For others, they prefer more of a hands-off approach and I'm happy with that too. As their date gets closer I'll work with them on the tasting, answers any questions they have, reach out to their vendors, confirm their food and beverage requirements, handle room reservations and help them with items to bring such as personal champagne flutes for toasting etc. On the day of the wedding I'm 100% here for them. I have an operations background so I'm making sure the linens perfectly touch the floor, the candles are arranged just right!

Leah: What do you enjoy most about your job?
Gabi: So many things!!! Most of all, the connections I make. I get really attached to the couples. We'll be going back and forth for a while on all of their plans and I'll really get to know them and what the day means to them. It's an honor to build such relationships and to be a part of something that you know they'll remember for a lifetime. As an independent boutique hotel we really have a sense of family and once you get married here, you're part of the Colonnade family! We'll often help couples out with plans for anniversaries, dinners at Brasserie Jo.

Leah: What advice would you have for a couple who haven't yet decided on their venue?
Gabi: Choose a venue that fits your personality and style. Don't change your plans to fit your venue. An extreme example would be a relaxed sport-obsessed couple deciding to get married in a museum or library - it won't feel right! Some venues have restrictions that can limit your day.

Couples that choose The Colonnade are usually more modern traditional. They're sophisticated and appreciate understated elegance. If they're foodies they've definitely come to the right place! We're very aware of the emotional aspect of the day and the whole hotel staff is there to provide a personal touch. We only ever do one wedding a day, they pretty much own the hotel for the night [Leah: this makes a big difference, it's a little weird when there are maybe 3 weddings in the same venue...]. Everything from getting ready in our 950sq ft bridal suite [Leah again: and it has the most beautiful light for pictures!!!] to the customization of the food is all about making this completely memorable.

And then I got to meet with Hotel Executive Chef and Director of Food & Beverage, Nicholas Calias - which was a blast. So many interesting stories and you can't help but be blown away by his absolute passion for food and love for weddings.

Leah: Chef Nick, thank you for meeting with me! Can you tell me a little bit about how you became a chef?
Chef Nick: My parents actually owned a restaurant so I could cook a perfectly medium-rare steak before I could throw a curve ball! I'm originally from NH and now live on the Seacoast and I honestly feel like I have the best job in the city of Boston. The Colonnade is an independent hotel so there's a lot of freedom in my role. I have a great Vice President and General Manager who allow us to really showcase the food and the hotel to it's very best.

Leah: I have to comment on the cheese display I saw at Alison and Matt's wedding. There are almost no words to describe it and I don't think it's what guests would ever expect to see at a wedding...
Chef Nick: I personally hate the expected/standard cheese plate you see at so many weddings. You dump some cheese on a plate with toothpicks and within moments it looks picked over and completely unappetizing. I have somewhat of a china fetish and so I came up with the idea of having tiny individual cheese plates with a garnish. The first wedding I did this for, the couple entered the room and literally started to cry. They couldn't believe how it was set up. And it grew from there. We added fondue, then the baked brie, the house-made ricotta with pickled vegetables.
I remember talking to a couple about their wedding and the bride told me her Dad was really against the cheese display but she asked him to trust her. A week after the wedding I got a 3 page letter raving about the wedding, the service etc and 2 pages were solely about the cheese! The best part is at the end of cocktail hour it still looks amazing and appealing.

Leah: It's so refreshing to hear how you want to give couples the very best experience at their wedding. I obviously spend every weekend at different venues and there are definitely those where you feel they're just churning out mass-produced food with no love.
Chef Nick: We're a little different here at the Colonnade. I personally like to meet with couples. Why wouldn't you want to get to know the person who will be cooking your food and feeding your guests? We're here to make you look good! This is your wedding day and if your guests are happy then you'll be happy! Much as I love innovating and coming up with creative menus, I'm also very conscious that it's YOUR wedding day. I've even incorporated family recipes into the menu when it's been important to the couple.

Leah: What happens at a tasting? What should the couple look for or expect?

Chef Nick: By the time they leave they should have full trust and absolutely no worries. We advise them they'll be here for 2-3 hours. They'll get to try all sorts of things, even see what the china will look like. We discuss the food, what they'd like to see served.

Leah: How would you describe the food at The Colonnade? Other than awesome ;)

Chef Nick: Our food, much like the venue, is sophisticated with a simple elegance. I don't ever want to serve banquet food. I cook and serve restaurant quality food in a banquet setting. I want your guests to have a beautiful dining experience vs. just eat dinner. We take huge pride in our food, everything is made from scratch with a lot of love. We don't do hot boxes, it's all plated on the line and delivered straight to the table. We've plated 270 meals in 13 minutes including roasted vegetables in Le Creuset individual dishes.

Speaking of Le Creuset individual dishes, here they are, note the steak - no dried out meat here!

Chef Nick: I love working with couples to make their wedding reception really memorable. We've done "fast food for dessert" with pound cake "burger buns" and a chocolate pâté "burger". Tiny sugar cookie "french fries" and raspberry puree "ketchup".

We don't ever take the easy option and we want to make everything the absolute best it can be. At The Colonnade you won't find a little plate of hard butter balls on the table. Each guest will have their own individual dish of salted butter and a fresh herb butter at just the right temperature to spread on their hot fresh roll.

Leah: What advice would you have a couple planning their wedding as it relates to the food that will be served?
Chef Nick: You don't need to compromise. If there's something that's important to you your venue should work with you on it. Don't feel like you need to defer to the venue. Be honest about what you want. Yes, there are the big chain hotels in Boston , I'm friends with most of the chefs, but make sure you're not hung up on a name. I truly believe we offer the best food in the city, We're have a great location, we're the only hotel with a roof top pool, we have the best team of people who'll work with you for an outstanding event! I'd also suggest spending your money wisely. If I feel a couple are thinking of having an excessive number of food or dessert stations I'll work with them to save their money!

Leah: You're so right! The Colonnade has a somewhat unassuming facade and the first time I walked inside I was just wowed. My expectations were completely exceeded. I can't think of any other venue in Boston where you can take beautiful elegant ballroom pictures and then go up to the roof! On the wedding day, what's your role?
Chef Nick: I personally greet the couple on their arrival and then we start cooking the hor d'oeuvres. I want everything to be fresh and piping hot for their friends and family. I always check in and say goodbye. I want each couple to be completely happy with their experience.

Leah: Thank you so much! I think this will be really useful information for many couples. One last "fun" question. What would you want for your last meal? [this was the first time I saw him a little stumped :) as he tried to narrow down all of the options!]
Chef Nick: Wow, where to start? Well, I know who I'd want my last meal with, it would be with my wife and our three chidren. I'm torn between a peanut butter and fluff sandwich with a glass of milk...or maybe a great roast rack of lamb with an olive tapenade?

And with that Chef Nick had to head back to work. Interestingly he is also the Director of Food & Beverage with a big team to manage but he chooses to stay in his chef whites. I hope this interview gave you an insight into the absolute passion he has for food. As Gabi and I finished chatting, he sent out this riff on "breakfast for dinner" with pork belly that was perfectly unctuous and crispy all at the same time, topped with a tiny quail egg, brioche toast soldiers and all sorts of other deliciousness on the plate. I would put this in the top 5 things I have ever eaten (and I've eaten a lot of awesome food in my time!).

So hopefully this blog post had some useful information about important things to consider when choosing your Boston wedding venue. You've heard from Gabi and Nick about the service and the food and now I'll share just a few more pictures of Alison & Matt's wedding to show you why I adore shooting at the Colonnade:

#1 Where else in Boston do you have an elegant black and white floor, beautiful ballrooms AND a rooftop pool? Photographic opportunities abound!

#2 The Colonnade has the BEST location. You're minutes from the Public Gardens, perfect for family pictures and cute little moments like this:

#3 The ballrooms are beautiful. The lighting is a photographer's dream. Interestingly there are no windows and I wouldn't have even noticed until someone else pointed it out. If you have your cocktail hour on the rooftop, your guests will still be in awe of the view when they sit down for dinner. Beautiful ambience for a first dance:

Vendor Spotlight :: Best Boston Wedding Videographer Team :: Long Haul Films

If you missed yesterday's post about Tom & Melissa - the awesome team behind Long Haul Films - then click **here** to catch up.

Over the last 5 years of photographing weddings I've seen all sorts of crazy shenanigans from the videographers:
- the one who circled the couple like a shark 3-5 times at key romantic moments
- the one who brought two assistants and all three of them crammed into the room where the bride was getting dressed.
- the one who refused to move his tripod - preventing the wide shot of the church that the bride had requested
- the one who insisted on walking backwards down aisle inches away from the bride's face, blocking the view of the groom
- the one who brought two huge lighting rigs to the reception killing the ambience of the chandeliers and candles
- the one thought he was on a movie set vs. a wedding and made the couple restage/repeat everything three time to make sure he "got it"

It's one of the main reasons why I ask couples if they're planning on video when I meet with them. If they're thinking about it I suggest they look into one of only three that I can happily recommend. Yes - out of all of the videographers that I've seen at over one hundred weddings, there are only three that I'll recommend.

Of course, done well, wedding films can be spectacular! You don't notice the video being recorded and it complements the still images perfectly.

Think of your grandparents, maybe you have a couple of grainy black and white images of the day they got married, maybe you're lucky and they got a wedding album. Now imagine you had video of their wedding day. Imagine being able to see them moving and being able to listen to them make their vows. That video would be priceless.

I know it's tough to stick to a budget when wedding planning but I would suggest putting (good) video ahead of things that will be forgotten like the letterpress invitations, the basket of flip flops, the candy bar - all awesome things but no one ever looks back and says "I wish we'd spent more on flip flops"

And the point of all of this? Well, I wanted to share with you one of my three video recommendations! They're Melissa & Tom of Long Haul Films, they're a husband and wife team and they just "get it" when it comes to weddings and marriage. Exhibit A - here's their 2011 highlights video and if you watch it all the way to the end and don't get a little lump in your throat or a tear in your eye then you are heartless! Do you hear me? Heartless :)

Here they are in action at a recent video shoot interviewing some of my previous wedding clients (check back at 1pm today for the official screening of the first of six mini films about Leah Haydock Photography):

Tom is British, just like me! And his background is full of film magic including a master's degree in feature film production from the prestigious Goldsmiths College in London. Melissa also has a creative background in all sorts of digital and social media strategy, marketing and with Tom she founded the most awesome blog on marriage called "The Long Haul Project."

In my opinion, Tom & Melissa are story tellers at heart, whether it's one of their short films, documentaries, commercial films or a wedding video - they're able to tell the story in moving pictures and sound.

As an example, here are some of my favorite pictures from Eunis & Jeff's wedding at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, MA last year. Vendor Spotlight :: Best NH Wedding Planner :: Diana Ma Weddings and Events

Happy Monday! Coming up today on the blog I have another vendor spotlight - this time I'll be chatting with Diana of Diana Ma Weddings & Events based in Hooksett, NH but working with couples all over New England.

Diana had been on my radar as I'd heard a bunch of great stuff about her from other wedding vendors but we hadn't yet had the opportunity to work together. So I was delighted to find out she would be taking part in the wedding color themed editorial shoot that Seacoast Weddings did last year. Alas, Diana and I were not on the same team but I was blown away by the elegant white tablescape she dreamt up - it was sophisticated with just the perfect amount of glam! We also got to chat and I was wowed by how friendly and approachable Diana was.

Fast forward to last month and I was planning my own event. Not quite as big as a wedding but I had rented a venue for a promotional video project (coming soon...!). I had the venue and a list of the couples I'd photographed who would be able to attend but I was starting to feel a little overwhelmed. I wasn't sure about decor and the logistics were giving me nightmares. I was trying to figure out how I'd be present for the filming but how to make sure everyone was fed and that we had refreshments through the day. And then I sent out a tentative little email to Diana. And just like I'm sure it is for her couples, a weight was lifted from my shoulder! We met for lunch and I shared my vision for the day and Diana took care of everything kind of like I would have done but better! She was supremely easy to work with, no question was too silly and her organizational skills were second to none. She even brought along boxes of her own crystal votives to further add to the set. Here she is...well, her hands anyway...in action:

I've worked with a number of wedding planners and coordinators over the years and I'm super delighted to add Diana to the very select list of experienced companies I recommend (which right now includes Infinite Events, CMD Event Design, Pink Orchid Weddings, Corinthian Events and Gracie Lou Events)

Before we go further here is Diana herself - how adorable is she?

Leah: Tell me about Diana Ma Weddings & Events?
Diana: I officially launched this wedding planning company in 2009 after many years of organizing parties, gatherings and weddings for friends. Right now, Diana Ma Weddings & Events specializes in month-of coordination and we have a variety of packages around that concept. My clients tend to be hands-on folks who've dreamed about their wedding day since birth. But as we all know, you can't be a planner when it's your own wedding day! My clients get to sit back and enjoy their wedding day, while my team handles all of the details and troubleshooting behind the scenes. On most wedding days there are a myriad of mini-catastrophes that arise. We handle and solve such issues immediately, while the couple laughs and mingles with their guests. We make sure the event day flows from one thing to the next, so that guests are never bored, feeling listless or confused about where they need to be at what time. We make sure things run according to schedule so that dinner does not get cold and there is plenty of party time left over after cake-cutting for dancing! We take your vision and make things come to life. We are also with you as much or as little as you wish and will gladly review vendor contracts, offer advice and be your cheerleader throughout stressful moments. Our packages vary depending on different needs, but they generally include rehearsal direction, detailed prep, vendor coordination, scheduling, event management and breakdown.

Leah: What kind of events do you specialize in? Do you have a favorite type of event?
Diana: All parties are very special to me, but I do love weddings. It's got to be one of the happiest rites of passage anyone ever gets to experience and I love being right there to make sure things go off without any [visible] glitches.

Leah:How did you get into this business?
Diana: Honestly, I never thought about having my own wedding planning business. Don't laugh, but a random trip to a tarot card reader in 2008 made me decide to pursue a profession that tapped into my gifts – organizing, coordinating, helping people. I kind of shrugged off her advice at first, but the more I researched the profession, the more things made sense and the more I realized what a great fit it was. I launched Diana Ma Weddings & Events in June 2009. My background has been in management and marketing since graduating from the Boston University School of Management in 2002.
I accept a select number of commissions each year as I adhere to the concept of quality over quantity. Wedding planning is an all-consuming job! Taking on a small handful of events per year enables my clients to enjoy my undivided attention.

Leah: What inspires you?
Diana: People inspire me. Love inspires me. Raw emotion inspires me. My clients tend to be really well-rounded folks who have a firm handle on the big picture. They understand what's important and are focused on their love and choice to commit to one another.

Leah: Tell me about the different types of service/support/organization you offer?
Diana: I offer a variety of packages, but will customize to suit people's case-by-case needs. The best way to figure out what works is to first give me a call to discuss where you are in your planning. This allows me to assess how I could best be of service and then we go from there! I am someone who hates to feel pressure from anyone or anything. A lot of times, people get scared at the thought of calling a potential service provider because they anticipate hearing an endless sales pitch. I keep my conversations very informative and leave the ball totally in the inquirer's position.... without any pressure (both spoken and unspoken!). And if things don't work out from that call - be it because we've already been booked that day, etc. I am always happy to recommend other reputable planners. I am committed to helping no matter what!

Leah: Tell me a little more about general planning vs. day of coordination? What kind of events/weddings is this appropriate for? What kind of difference does it make on the day?
Diana: "Day-of" is generally not as inclusive as a month-of package (day-of has minimal set-up and no breakdown). In order for us to do the job properly, we want to understand what has been done so far and what has to get resolved - all of which involves a bit of time and research before hand. I find that folks who are usually looking for day-of, really want a month-of package :-). However, if you are restricted by budget and need help coordinating complicated guest shuttling and an awkward timeline, a day-of package might be useful to you. Everyone's party planning situations are different. The best way for me to assess the optimal course of action and whether a day-of or month-of package is more appropriate would be with a preliminary phone chat first.

Leah: Tell me about the craziest thing/issue that has even arisen at a wedding, how did you deal with it?
I have been lucky in that the issues I've come across were all solvable *knocking on wood for upcoming events*!!! The most stress-inducing problem occured during an off-site wedding last year when the caterer's source of power went dead right in the middle of heating up entrees. I rushed to my car and grabbed every extension cord (that I just happen to bring with me!) and we were able to snake plugs through a nearby office building (that was oddly un-locked) to get the food heated. It was a stressful period of five minutes where my blood pressure felt like it was going to explode! Dinner started just 10 minutes late and no one seemed to notice or mind at all. In fact, I remember having to coax my bride to her seat to get people eating!

Leah: What do you love about your job?
Diana: I love helping people. There isn't a single thing more gratifying than helping people when they are at their happiest!

Leah: When you're not event planning/coordinating, what do you like to do?
Diana: When I am not working, I love to just re-group and collect myself. I wish I could say something really cool and exotic like travel to unchartered parts of the world for new sources of inspiration. The truth is, I like to spend quality time with my husband doing absolutely nothing. I also highly cherish my morning ritual of waking up super early, getting a good work out in and just taking time to relax and think. Clear thinking helps me become a better person and be even more valuable to my clients.

So there you have it! If you're feeling overwhelmed with your wedding to-do list or you'd love a fabulous sounding board about your far-off wedding plans then get in touch with the fabulous Diana. I can tell you from personal experience that she's beyond organized, super positive (even when you email a gazillion stupid questions) and even better an absolute hoot to have around!

Vendor Spotlight :: Hair That Moves :: Amazing Wedding Hair That Comes To You

Hello! It's that kind of in-between time of year. Not cold and snowy enough for winter engagement pictures and not warm/green enough for pretty spring engagement pictures but not to worry. I have a series of interesting and informative Vendor Spotlight interviews coming up in the next week or so - everything from my favorite wedding venues to florists and planners!

If you're new to the blog I select the people/companies for the interviews based on:
- my personal experience working with the vendor at weddings and other events
- I ask myself "Would I hire them on my wedding day?" and the answer has to be yes.

I get the occasional email from vendors asking if they can be featured/pay to be featured - ugh - I don't think so! I select people based on the quality of their work and professionalism on the wedding day, those that I'm happy to see when I arrive because I know my couples will be well taken care of!

Which incidentally is NOT always the case for "preferred vendor lists" if you receive any kind of preferred vendor list I always recommend asking "What is the criteria for listing vendors on this list?" and "Do the vendors pay a fee to be listed?" You would be horrified at the fees charged by some venues to be a "preferred vendor" and the kickbacks "expected" by certain vendors with less integrity...of course you should still absolutely meet all of the vendors you hire for your own wedding day but hopefully these interviews might help.

Anyway, today's vendor spotlight is the awesome Lena of www.HairThatMoves.com. I have had the pleasure of working with Lena (pronounced Len-a vs Lean-a) at four different weddings now so I feel very confident in recommending her fabulous hair services.

I would estimate that hair and make up almost ALWAYS run late at weddings. At maybe 80% of weddings I shoot, photography gets cut back because hair and make up go over. But this never happens with Lena as the hairdresser which is why I am always ecstatic when I arrive and see Lena with her curling irons, hairspray and pins!

Let's get to it:

Leah: Tell me about Hair That Moves
Lena: I started Hair That Moves about 8 years ago. Initially my plan was to cater to my long term loyal hair clients - especially busy moms and professionals who don't have the time to sit in a salon. A well known wedding planner asked me to participate in a styled wedding shoot and this opened up my interest in working on weddings all over the New England region.

Here's Lena:

Leah: How is "wedding hair" different to everyday hair? If a bride is thinking of doing her own hair is there anything she should be aware of?
Lena: Wedding hair is built on a foundation that will last for hours, look soft and shiny, and hold in place. Being camera-ready means as little fuzz and frizz as possible. Everyday hair has imperfections. frizz, curl, bend and while I love to style and color all of these hair types, it is a little more"natural". On your wedding day you may have pictures taken at 11am, a ceremony at 1pm, your first dance at 6pm and your hair needs to look healthy, shiny and flawless for hours! Over the years I've figured out techniques to make hair look natural yet really polished and to make sure the look lasts for 8 hours plus!

Here's Diana and her beautiful bridesmaids with hair by Hair That Moves:

Note that in the picture above Diana's hair is perfectly curled, looks shiny and healthy. That picture was probably taken around 1pm. Now fast forward through a wedding ceremony, family pictures on the (windy) rocks of Nubble Light, couples pictures on the beach in the sun, crazy dancing at the reception and here are Diana & Jeff just before 10pm that night. Note how Diana's hair still looks awesome - no frizz, no limp curls.

Leah: And what about a friend offering to help with hair?
Lena: If the friend has professional hair experience that's awesome but I've heard horror stories of friends just not being aware of the time pressures on a wedding day and everything running late. They may also struggle to curl hair so it lasts for hours or to get a really polished look.
After doing hair at weddings for 8 years, I know to ask questions about the plans and advise accordingly. If the ceremony is on a hot, humid or windy beach then I'm going to suggest an updo to prevent a frizzy mess in pictures! I'm sure you've had to take pictures when all of the bridesmaid's hair is flying all over the place because they didn't think of the logistics of the day!

Here's Lena doing Lauren's hair for her Kennebunkport wedding to Dave:

Lena also did hair for all of the bridesmaids and Lauren's Mom. My favorite "Mother of the Bride" hair ever:

And after a very windy/scorchingly hot outdoor ceremony by the ocean, check out Lauren's perfect hair during the first dance with her new husband. Take that humid-frizz ocean air! You are no match for Lena's magic hair skills:

Leah: So if a couple are in the early stages of planning, when should they start thinking about hair?
Lena: It's never to early to get in touch with me! I already have a bunch of dates booked for 2013 and we haven't even started the 2012 wedding season! I always recommend a design appointment or a trial. We can talk about what you're looking for on your wedding day; it's really helpful to bring photos and pictures of hair you LOVE and also that you DON'T like so I can get a better sense of what you're looking for.
I can also get a feel for your hair, face shape, desired look ect. After having this appointment and/or the trial you should feel confident that your hair will look amazing on your wedding day!

Leah: Is your focus always on the bride?
Lena: Well, obviously the bride is my priority but I want the whole wedding party and family to be happy with their hair. I bring a huge binder of hair styles for all types of hair and chat to the bridesmaids and the moms before I start their hair. They really appreciate being able point to a picture and say, well I love the structure in this but I'd like bigger curls/less volume etc. I'm conscious that the bridesmaids are spending their money too and I want them to love how they look!

Here's Lena helping pick out a style from her big book of hair with one of Catherine's bridesmaids back in October:

Catherine's veil being pinned (I love that Lena also shows a bridesmaid how to carefully remove the veil without pulling out the style)

And Catherine's beautiful updo with jeweled hairpin. You are probably thinking that Rob's reaction is utter joy at seeing his wife for the first time but perhaps he was thinking "OMG, I have never seen Catherine's hair look so awesome!" Kidding ;)

Leah: Are there any common "hair mistakes" you hear about and advice on avoiding these?
Lena: I would say the most common mistake brides make are letting others try to influence them away from what they want. So a bride might really want to wear her hair down but maybe a sister, mom or friend is trying to convince them to do something different.
Sometimes it can be a challenge to achieve a look based on the natural hair type, volume and length. Luckily extensions and hair pieces can help in this situation but a trial would be even more important in this case.
From a practical/timing point of view, you should schedule any chemical service (color, straightening, perming) two weeks before the wedding to allow your hair to settle down but not long enough for your roots to show. It's best not to try a new dramatic color in case you don't love it. An intense conditioning treatment or shine/gloss treatment is also a great idea.

Leah: I know from a photography point of view it's much easier for me to take the getting ready pictures if hair and make up come to you but are there other reasons?
Lena: It's really a time and convenience thing. On your wedding day you want to eliminate any causes of stress - like traffic, looking for a parking spot etc, hoping your bridesmaids aren't late to their appointment. So having hair and make up come to your hotel suite or home makes everything easier and it's more fun to all get ready together.

Here's Lena in action doing Jane's hair for her wedding to Wendy just last month:

And Lena doesn't only do updos, she did everyone's hair in the image below - short hair, long hair, guy's hair!

Leah: What wedding hair trends are you seeing right now?
Lena: Braiding is really big right now; partial braids or even incorporating a few tiny random braids into an up-do. I'm seeing less super-constructed up-dos, more of a softer natural feel. I love to watch award shoes like the Oscars for inspiration and trends. I get occasional requests for flowers in hair, it's really important to talk to your florist to identify a flower that will last all day. I'm seeing a lot of beautiful hairpieces, often from Etsy that compliment the dress perfectly. And veils have been shorter in past years.

Leah: Speaking of veils, they're usually only worn for the ceremony so how do you style the hair so that it still looks great once the veil is removed?
Lena: I'll talk to the client and find out when she plans on removing her veil. We can work in a small hairpiece or a jeweled hair ornament so it still looks special once the veil is removed. I'll also show one of the bridesmaids how to carefully remove the veil.

Leah: Tell me a little about your qualifications?
Lena: Well, I'm a licensed cosmetologist and hair designer. So I can officially do hair, make up and nails. Having a licensed professional means that they're more aware of sanitization and good practices. I also carry business insurance. It's the little things you don't think of if you're new to the wedding industry - for example I bring silicone heat mats to rest curling and straightening irons on so I don't cause damage to furniture or carpet!

Leah: Tell me something about you that people might not know and what you do when you're not doing hair?
Lena: Oh, this is a hard one. I may look confident, but I'm definitely an observer first and a talker second. I try really hard to overcome this, but I'm not a fan of being center of attention. [Side note from Leah - this is actually awesome on your wedding day, Lena will talk to you if you want her to but it's not the "Lena Show". I've worked with some hairdressers who don't shut up. Blah blah blah and it can get really annoying when you want to relax, chat with your friends and family]. When I'm not doing hair I'm a busy mom with two great children and I love just spending time with them and my husband.

Leah: This was awesome! Thank you! Any final remarks?
Lena: I just love seeing and being involved in getting the bride with un-done hair in her bathrobe to pinning on her veil once she's in her wedding dress. It's just magical to see her reaction when she looks in the mirror or when her bridesmaids or parents see her for the first time. I get such a great feeling when the bride says "Wow, I look amazing! I didn't think I'd look like this.". I also really enjoy working with experienced make up artists to come up with a great schedule (make sure you check out **this** blog post on Joya Beauty who Lena usually works with) and of course working with great photographers so we get to see all of our hard work look amazing on the day.

Lena is obviously crazy busy with weddings at the weekend but during the week she also does "everyday" hair in and around the Dover, NH region. I personally used to get my hair done at a high end salon in Andover, MA but after paying $290 for cut/color/highlights and not being able to see any difference at all I tried Lena out for my own hair and I am happy to inform you that the results were awesome (and over 50% less than the Andover salon!) and I am now a regular client.

Vendor Spotlight :: Soirée, Andover :: Wedding Invitations, Stationery, Favors and more!

It's been a few months since my last Vendor Spotlight interview but I have a wonderful one for you to make up for it! Today I'm introducing you to Soirée in Andover - if you don't have your invitations and wedding stationery picked out yet you should make sure it's your next stop on the wedding planning tour!!!

I first became aware of Soirée when I photographed Alison & Matt's wedding at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston back in October of last year. I ask all of my brides for a list of their vendors so I know whether or not to mention on my blog post. Alison couldn't speak highly enough of her experience at Soirée and her wedding stationery was just beautiful:

Such elegant invitations, escort cards, programs and menus :)

So a few weeks ago I found myself in Andover, MA after getting my eyebrows waxed. I wasn't really paying attention to where I was as I wandered into this cute looking storefront thinking it would be a good time to look into some new notecards.

As I looked through all of the amazing notecard options it dawned on me that I was in Soirée! Home of Alison's lovely wedding stationery. I ended up laughing about the coincidence with Trish and Rebecca and they kindly forgave my angry looking eyebrows ;) I made an appointment to come back and interview them for the blog and here's my discussion with Trish Martini the proud owner of Soirée:

Leah: So Trish, tell me all about Soirée!
Trish: Well, I'd actually worked for the previous owner for 5 years when I had the opportunity to buy the store 3 years ago. We then moved to Main Street in Andover. Soirée offers unique invitations, fine stationery, exquisite favors and accents. We specialize in custom work to fit all budgets.
We do a lot of weddings but we also do invitations and stationery for all milestone events including Bat/Bar Mitzvahs, bridal showers, baby showers, birthdays and anniversaries.
I'm also a certified etiquette consultant so as part of our service we offer free etiquette advice to clients - everything from how to address an envelope correctly and wording the dress code to helping them get through sticky situations!

Leah: What are some of the things that sets Soirée apart from others?
Trish: We're a full service stationer which is really great for the busy bride. They can literally come in and with just one consultation we can design and order the stationery, package and mail it so the RSVPs magically appear in their mailbox with the minimum work! We also work with a lot of venues and planners and understand the wedding process intimately. [Leah's comment - this is AWESOME - if you haven't yet sent out your invitations you probably don't realize how much work it is to assemble, stuff envelopes, get them addressed, mail them out etc etc]

Leah: What about timelines for invitations?
Trish: The earlier a bride comes to see us the better! As soon as you have a date and venue it's a great time to come in to visit as we can help you plan your budget for wedding stationery. There are so many beautiful items you can think about such as programs, seating charts, favor boxes, menus and much more. Generally save the date cards are sent out 6-12 months before the date (err on the longer side if you have a holiday weekend) and invitations go out 6-8 weeks before with an RSVP deadline of one month.

Leah: How should a bride prepare for a visit to Soirée? Do they need to bring anything?
Trish: We're used to working with all sorts of brides. From the ones that arrive with a clean slate, no ideas and looking for a lot of help to the others that come armed with fabric swatches, color palettes and fonts. We love both! You can choose an invitation to fit with the feel and style of your event or some brides will even design their wedding around the invitation!
Your invitation helps set the tone of your wedding for your guests for example a black tie affair will likely have a more formal invitation and will make your guests aware of the dress code.

Leah: So Trish, my favorite part of these vendor spotlights are getting all sorts of tips and tricks from experienced wedding professionals to help my blog readers. What would you like to share when it comes to wedding stationery?
Trish: Well, first of all, putting your invitations together is fairly easy, it's seating charts that are one of the hardest tasks! And often the one that the couple leave until the last moment. I always advise creating a seating vision board which will show where everyone will be seated if they all confirm they are coming. You can then remove people if they decline which is MUCH easier than trying to start a seating chart from scratch 2 weeks before your wedding.

Be specific on your invitations. We offer all sorts of etiquette advice about how to work invitations if you would like to have an adult-only reception and how to deal with uninvited guests on the RSVP cards.

Leah: What are some of the mistakes that couples make when ordering their wedding stationery?
Trish: We always encourage our couples to make sure they order enough invitations/favor boxes and programs. Some items will have a long lead time and if you decide to increase your numbers then there might not be time to order additional.

Leah: Very helpful information - especially about the seating chart. I remember pulling my hair out trying to do ours maybe 2 nights before our wedding party! What do you most enjoy about owning Soirée?
Trish: I just love getting to know our customers. We really form a relationship as they're here to choose their designs, they may come in for save the date cards, and then to pick up their invitations. We get really excited to hear how the wedding goes. We have a lot of customers who will come back for birth announcements after the wedding for example. We've worked with couples to design die plates which they can then use on their personal stationery for the rest of their married life which is lovely.

Leah: I love it when I get to see my wedding couples for newborn picture too! Anything else you'd like to mention?
Trish: Brides are often surprised at what a one-stop-shop we are, from the full stationery service to all sorts of other delights like personalized cake serving sets, champagne flutes, favor boxes! I always advise our customers to really think about the details and make it their own wedding through personalization. We love to collaborate with couples and make this a wonderful stress free experience!

Thank you to Trish for being so awesome and sharing such great information. If you're not familiar with Andover, MA it's a real hot bed of wedding activity with the new bridal center that recently opened. Christina's Bridal is there (awesome dress store, it's where I got my wedding dress) and you should also check out Les Fleurs for the most divine flowers. In fact make a day of it and have lunch in one of the many little restaurants there too!

Here's the cornucopia of products that greet you when you enter:

A plethora of wedding stationery options:
